John Harris has been involved in the wine industry for over a decade, taking on his first role as a vintage Cellar Hand for Normans Wines at the old Normans Clarendon Winery. Since this time he has travelled extensively across Australia, New Zealand and America, but has returned to the iconic Barossa Valley which he now calls home where he has a strong ancestral history and a great love of the region. Despite travelling to numerous wine regions across the globe with differing climates, terrain, wine styles and ideals, John still believes his greatest influences are the South Australian “characters” whom he has met throughout the years and who have influenced his winemaking style.

John’s long association with Normans and other boutique and commercial wineries over the past decade have seen him working in winemaking, sales and senior management roles which have given him a wonderful opportunity to see both the success and struggles which face modern day wine companies big and small.

John’s philosophy is “Winemaking isn’t a job, it’s a way of life and if you truly believe that then you will be amazed at what perseverance and time can achieve. If people enjoy drinking my wine half as much I have enjoyed the journey making them, then I’m halfway home and doing what I’m meant to be doing. The key to a great wine is quality fruit and a great relationship between grape grower and winemaker; if you get the grapes right then winemaking is the easy part”.
